ICA Kenya Development Programs

Climate Change Development Program

Climate change presents a critical global challenge, affecting every facet of life. ICA Kenya's proposed development program is designed to tackle this issue head-on by promoting sustainable practices and aiding vulnerable communities in adapting to its impacts. Through a blend of mitigation and adaptation measures, we strive to reduce carbon emissions and foster resilience for a brighter, more sustainable future. Join us in our mission to combat climate change and build a better world for generations to come.

Integrated Health Development Program

Integrated Health Development (IHD) recognizes the pivotal role of WASH training programs in fostering improved health outcomes. Our proposal outlines a holistic strategy to design and implement impactful IHD WASH training initiatives. By focusing on water, sanitation, and hygiene practices, we aim to empower communities for healthier living. Join us in advancing this crucial mission for a healthier, more sustainable future.

Community Development Program

ICA Kenya is dedicated to fostering community empowerment through our participatory approach to development, aptly named "Do Our Own Project" (DOOP). By harnessing the expertise and resources within local communities, we aim to cultivate self-confidence, self-reliance, and self-sufficiency. Our vision is to build inclusive communities devoid of tribal, gender, religious, or cultural biases, where every individual can thrive. Join us in our journey towards sustainable and equitable development.

Entrepreneurship for Sustainability Program

The Entrepreneurship for Sustainability Program equips individuals and communities with essential knowledge and skills to foster sustainable businesses and livelihoods. Through tailored training and support, we empower aspiring entrepreneurs to build resilient ventures that not only thrive economically but also contribute positively to our planet and society. Join us in catalyzing a new generation of sustainable leaders driving meaningful change.

Community Empowerment Through Sustainable Development

Our Case Studies

Kamweleni, Machakos, Kenya

In 2019, led by Patrick Mbullu and Henry Ikatukhu, a team conducted research to explore the enduring impact of Technology of Participation methods and the wider ICA approach in Kenya. Among the insightful findings was the story of Kamweleni Human Development Project (HDP), initiated in 1978 in Machakos District. This rural development pilot project exemplified ICA's ethos of community empowerment through participatory action. From collaborative planning to skill-building initiatives like brick making and poultry keeping, Kamweleni thrived under ICA's guidance, reaching over 377,000 people across various projects. Challenges post-ICA intervention underscored the need for sustained coordination and succession planning to ensure the longevity of community-driven initiatives.

Vwevesi, Kenya: A Legacy of Transformation

ICA's footprint in Kenya extended to Vwevesi, where a Human Development Project (HDP) commenced in 1980. Over eight years, the project touched the lives of over 100,000 individuals across 120 villages. Notable achievements included accessible healthcare services, enhanced food security, and vibrant small businesses. Decades later, the community's resilience and commitment to ICA's principles remain evident as they strive to re-register the project and uphold key lessons learned. Challenges persist, particularly in farming and maternal health, yet the spirit of collaboration and skill-building instilled by ICA continues to drive progress and community cohesion.

Lessons Learned and Future Endeavors

The narratives of Kamweleni and Vwevesi underscore the transformative potential of community-led development initiatives. Key lessons emerge, emphasizing the importance of effective leadership, skill acquisition, and holistic community engagement. Moving forward, these insights inform not only the revitalization of past projects but also the design of future interventions. By fostering self-reliance, inclusivity, and sustainability, ICA's legacy lives on, inspiring generations to build resilient communities and pursue lasting change.
